by | May 3, 2021 | SEO | 0 comments

We already know how to find ourselves at least once blocked in front of a site that does not perform in Google without really knowing why. So of course there are simple optimizations, like improving the title tag, Hns tags, which can have an immediate impact, but the technical errors that can slow down your site’s ranking are numerous.

Today I will teach you how to find your mistakes and correct them by performing an SEO audit.

I will explain to you what an SEO audit is and how to perform an effective analysis of your site.

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a thorough technical analysis of your site, this analysis will focus on all the important criteria ranquet in Google.

In this article I will introduce you to the basics of an SEO audit, as well as the essential tools to perform the perfect audit.

A question I am often asked is which tool do you use to carry out your SEO audits, the first tool I use is a free tool provided by google the famous google search console, it is a tool that we make it possible to check to follow the indexing of our site as well as its good health.

The second tool that I use regularly is the Screaming Frog tool, so screaming frog will crawl and free sites up to 500 url. Screaming Frog will give us precise and detailed information on a large number of SEO criteria such as broken links, redirects, structure, and site depth, title tags, Hns tags, meta description, etc.

Screaming Frog will provide us with a graphical visualization of the website.

Finally, is there a third SEO tool that I use on a daily basis? this is an extension for Google chrome is SEO META in 1 CLICK. With just one click it allows you to go and control numerous ranking criteria.

So these tools are complete but unfortunately they are not all very intuitive, Semrush site audit tool will therefore be an essential tool for our SEO strategy.

How can Semrush help you? Tool: Site Audit

Thanks to the Semrush site audit, we will be able to scan our site from A to Z? he receive simple and detailed reports on the health of our site. the audit will navigate on the site following the links between the pages? he will thus discover all the pages of the site and will give us valuable information on each of these pages.

We will thus obtain an index of the overall health of the site but also all the errors encountered, for all the pages exploring the site will indicate those which have problems, those which provide redirection, broken links, etc …

Website architecture

A good structure will group together similar content and make pages accessible in just a few clicks, a well-structured website can easily evolve over time, it will be easily crawled by Google robots.

Here are the five points to keep in mind to properly structure your site

First point: every page of the website should be accessible with just a few clicks from the home page.

Second point: The navigation menus must be simple and logical, they must create a successful user experience.

Third point: Pages and content must be grouped together in a logical and natural way.

Fourth point: Internal links must allow the user to move around the site in a logical manner.

Fifth point: The pages must display a breadcrumb trail, this will allow users to easily know where it is in the structure of the site.

If your site meets its five points, then it will be user-friendly and attractive to Google. So we won’t talk about the notion of budget crowls in this article, but keep in mind that the easier the website will be for Google robots to navigate, the more they can visit two pages every day, the better your indexing will be.

It is generally said that beyond three or four clicks the pages are too deep, and that they will have less chances of positioning themselves well and being well indexed in Google.

Nevertheless, note that it is possible to use certain types of internal mesh such as semantic cocoons which will allow you to overcome this barrier of three or four clicks.

Website security

You know Google announced in 2016 that it had penalized sites that use the unsecured http protocol, the one-way solution just use the secure https protocol based on the mind using an SSL certificate and in general it is very easy to set up on a hosting.

The https section of the Semrush audit will give you a list of security issues present on your website, e.g. is the SSL certificate up to date, is the certificate in the correct name, security protocols are they up to date, and finally, does the http version automatically redirect to the https version.

Web performance

the speed of loading of the pages of your website has a direct impact on the user experience and is a ranking factor in search engines.

Google has created its own tool to control the speed of your site, Google pagespeed insight, of course there are many other tools to test the performance of your website, we can mention Gtmetrix, Pingdom, personally, I use WebPageTest.

These tools will not only allow you to test the performance of your site and give you a detailed load time report, but also will give you recommendations to correct and optimize your website, which is very practical.

The core Web vitals are three new indicators created by Google in May 2020 and which will be included as a ranking criterion in the Google update, experience page scheduled for May 2021.

it is difficult today to anticipate the real impact of this new algorithm, Google page experience, but remember that your site must be fast to be pleasant and to convert.

Make sure you already keep a TTFB “Time To First Byte” as small as possible, ideally less than 6100 milliseconds.

Here are some tips to easily optimize the loading time of your website.

Image optimization

Optimization Images are the most common cause of performance issues, be sure to resize your images to the maximum size they are displayed on the site, and remember to compress your images either using a jpeg format or even better with newer formats like webp format.

Once the images are optimized you can also optimize the javascript, css and html resources, you can use minification tools that will remove comments and unnecessary spaces in its files, in order to reduce their weight.

If you want to go further in terms of web performance, you could explore the following avenues:

Use the cache both on the browser side which is quite easy and on the server side which can be much more complicated.

Deferred the loading of certain resources using lazyloading mechanisms.

Limit the number of HTTPS requests but also SQL if you use databases, and use a CDN like claudeFlare for example.

Mobile optimization

In 2021 more than half of internet traffic is on mobile, since spring 2018 Google launched The Mobile First index and Google announced that the index would be 100% mobile in March 2021.

The mobile first index is an indexing method allowing Google to analyze your website no longer based on this version of desktop for computers but by exploring its mobile version as if they were using a smartphone.

Several possibilities are available to you to optimize your sites, for mobiles you can create pages following the principles of responsive web design or use the AMP format, a mobile format created by Google.

AMP will allow your pages to load very quickly, because Google will serve AMP pages directly from its cache and no longer from your own server. You can test your AMP pages with the Semrush tool.

Duplicate content

The last point we will discuss today is duplicate content, if your site contains too many similar pages in terms of content this has disrupted search engines and have a detrimental effect on your SEO.

You must first of all be vigilant when creating content strategy, can avoid manually creating duplicate content but especially pay attention to the passes generated automatically by CMS.

I am thinking, for example, of category pages, of the WordPress tags page, also pay attention to the pagination and the faceted navigation mechanisms which are often the source of creation of duplicate content.

If duplicate content is often linked to CMS malfunctions, this too can quite simply happen when the http version of your site is not automatically redirected to the HTTPS version or when a non-WWW version is not automatically redirected to the HTTPS version. infection version with WWW.

Make sure to set up canonical tags on your urls, in particular to prevent urls with parameters from creating duplicate content.
